A Dreamy Escape to Darjeeling: The Queen of Hills

Nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling is a perfect getaway for couples, families, and groups of friends. With breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, lush tea gardens, colonial charm, and the famous toy train, this hill station in West Bengal promises a memorable experience for all.

In this blog, I’ll guide you on how to reach Darjeeling, where to stay, must-visit places, and some travel tips, along with interesting anecdotes from my journey!

How to Reach Darjeeling

By Air

  • The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), around 70 km from Darjeeling.
  • From the airport, hire a private taxi (₹2,500–₹3,500) or take a shared cab (₹500 per person).

By Train

  • The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 74 km from Darjeeling.
  • From NJP, you can take a taxi, shared cab, or the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train).

By Road

  • Darjeeling is well-connected by road to cities like Siliguri, Kalimpong, and Gangtok.
  • Shared jeeps and buses operate from Siliguri and NJP.

Anecdote: When I took the toy train from NJP to Darjeeling, a little boy in our coach asked his grandfather, “Dadu, why is this train moving so slowly?” The old man laughed and said, “So we can enjoy every moment of the journey, my child!” That’s exactly how Darjeeling should be explored—slowly and beautifully!
