A Journey to Ziro: Arunachal’s Hidden Paradise
Tucked away in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh, Ziro Valley is a destination that feels untouched by time. With its rolling green hills, lush paddy fields, bamboo houses, and Apatani tribal culture, Ziro is a perfect retreat for couples seeking solitude, families looking for a peaceful getaway, or groups of friends ready for an offbeat adventure.
This blog will guide you on how to reach Ziro, where to stay, what to explore, and some fun travel tips, along with memorable anecdotes from my journey!
How to Reach Ziro
Ziro is remote yet accessible, and the journey is as beautiful as the destination itself.
By Air
- The nearest airport is Lilabari Airport (in Assam), about 100 km from Ziro.
- From Lilabari, hire a taxi to Ziro (₹5,000–₹7,000 for a private cab).
The better option is to fly to Guwahati (GAU) or Dibrugarh (DIB), which have more flight options.
By Train
- The nearest railway station is Naharlagun (100 km from Ziro) or North Lakhimpur (120 km from Ziro).
- From either station, you can take a cab or shared sumo to Ziro.
By Road
- From Guwahati, Itanagar, or Dibrugarh, you can take a shared sumo (₹700–₹1,000 per person) or a private taxi.
- The journey is long (8–10 hours) but incredibly scenic, passing through dense forests, bamboo groves, and winding mountain roads.
Permit Requirement:
- Indian tourists need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. You can apply online.
- Foreign tourists need a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
Anecdote: On my way to Ziro, our driver played old Assamese folk songs while driving through mist-covered roads. A local passenger said, “These roads are long, but our music makes them shorter!” And he was right—the journey felt like a dream.
